About This Place

Al’s Breakfast is a beloved Minneapolis breakfast institution, nestled in the heart of the Dinkytown neighborhood near the University of Minnesota. This no-frills, cash-only diner delivers a timeless breakfast experience that’s as genuine as it gets—where the aroma of freshly brewed, bold black coffee mingles with the sizzling sounds and savory scents of hand-shredded hash browns and thick-cut bacon on the griddle.

The menu is a celebration of classic American breakfast fare elevated by simple, quality ingredients and thoughtful preparation. Standout dishes like the Eggs Benedict offer perfectly poached eggs resting on slices of ham and English muffins, lovingly blanketed with a bright, tangy homemade lemony hollandaise. Fans rave about the José Hash Browns, which arrive as a vibrant plate of shredded potatoes mixed with sharp cheddar cheese and housemade salsa, paired with a side of toast—a dish that feels both hearty and uniquely soulful.

For those with a sweet tooth, Al’s offers an irresistible array of pancakes dripping with the purest Minnesota maple syrup. The Walnut Blueberry Pancakes and Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes burst with wild Maine blueberries and are studded with crunchy walnuts. Every bite carries a perfect balance of fluffy texture and fruity sweetness that lingers in the mouth, making them a breakfast experience to savor. The Bacon Waffle adds a smoky, salty crunch to the morning, while the Chocolate Chip Pancakes turn breakfast into a decadent indulgence.

The atmosphere at Al’s Breakfast is as iconic as the food itself. The diner exudes a laid-back, slightly gritty charm—capturing the quintessential “grunge breakfast” vibe praised by many patrons. It’s a compact, bustling spot where locals and visitors stand shoulder to shoulder, waiting patiently for their turn to savor these classic dishes. The staff is notably friendly and attentive, delivering hot coffee “black as midnight” and ensuring that every guest feels at home despite the sometimes long waits.

Al’s Breakfast is not your typical family-friendly chain eatery, but rather a treasured local gem where authenticity reigns supreme and every bite tells a story. Whether you’re there to dive into the comforting plate of corned beef hash with poached eggs and rye toast, enjoy the savory depths of the Smokey Omelette, or just savor the perfect cup of coffee with a stack of buttermilk pancakes, this spot promises a memorable morning that leaves a lasting impression.

As customer Susan Findlay put it, Al’s did not disappoint, and her husband couldn’t stop talking about the corned beef hash. Mark Eidsen reminds us to come early on weekdays to beat the crowd and soak in that unmatched local vibe. Amie Kirby calls it the best breakfast in Minnesota, emphasizing the attentive service and fun menu twists that elevate the experience beyond expectations.

For anyone looking to immerse themselves in a true Minneapolis breakfast ritual, Al’s Breakfast offers a warm, honest, and utterly satisfying start to the day.

Googled breakfast near UMN and Al’s popped up and it did not disappoint! Summer Special was fabulous and my husband couldn’t stop talking about the corned beef hash. Would definitely recommend!5/5

A Minneapolis classic. If you’re trying to go with any sort of group, go early on a week day. Otherwise, expect to wait and have those who are up to bat stand right behind you. It’s not a family friendly spot but it’s the grunge breakfast experience that everyone has to try at least once. The food is good, the workers are great, and the unique experience unmatched.

Best breakfast in MN (seriously). Old fashioned and traditional with fun and different food options. The line is always long and out the door, but worth the wait. Staff is extremely attentive and friendly. We visit Al's every chance we get.

Stumbling into Al's Breakfast in Dinkytown I was greeted with a cardbox cutout sign informing me that this diner is cash only. My kind of place. I stood there for a while, waiting for a seat to free up. I didn't mind that at all, I just stood there a while looking around this tiny place. In the end I got seated and immediately got poured an honest cup of hot coffee. Black as midnight. I ordered up an omelette with toast, which I thoroughly enjoyed and got many refills on my coffee and chatted a bit with a stranger on my right hand side. Great no-nonsense atmosphere of a place that knows where it stands and does what it does and does it good. I quickly realised this ain't a place I could sit and daydream for too long, so I finished up and payed with a rustling bill. I'll be back one day, Al

Al’s is a vibe. I go super early in the morning to avoid the crowd. I usually get the Jose but the scrambled egg and cheese is awesome. I love this place. People are nice and it is a good atmosphere. The hash browns are cooked beautifully.
